We adopted Shelby on July 5, 2013 from Hope4Paws. She was almost 14 months old at the time and was thought to be a black lab/border collie mix. She was a wonderful dog and would do anything for a treat! Typical of labs she had a tremendous appetite, so I soon started using carrots as a low calorie treat for her. I enrolled her in obedience and she was a star pupil. Encouraged by her easy training and calm behavior, I had her tested for Canine Good Citizen and she passed with no problem. I decided to have her tested for Therapy Dog and she passed that with no extra training! When fall of 2013 came she began scratching often. I tried special shampoos and gluten free food. Her symptoms seemed to clear for a year, but returned the next fall. By January 2015 she began reverse sneezing and had a heavy nasal discharge. The next few months were filled with many vet trips, nasal cultures, several rounds of antibiotics, antihistamines, x-rays, and even a CT-scan. We finally did allergy testing and found she was reactive to many substances including her favorite carrot treats, timothy grass, molds, mildews and fungus. She also reacted to sweet potato, pumpkin, barley, and rice. Many of those ingredients are in traditional dry dog foods. That was when I discovered Nature Variety Instinct Limited Ingredient Duck! She has been on that for six months and along with eliminating her carrot treats, adding a daily antihistamine and a probiotic she is much improved. This fall with the timothy grass everywhere, she did have a recurrence of the sniffles, so we have started her on allergy shots, but we do know the Instinct LID was an important part of her recovery. Shelby visits two nursing homes and is in a Reading to Rover Program at the local public library. She earned her 50 therapy dog visit pin last spring and is close to 125 visits now. We are very happy she can see her friends without a runny nose!
